Nod Hill Barnwood
Nod Hill Barnwood is a small wood shop located in the beautiful and historic Nod Hill section of Wilton, CT; where owner and third-generation craftsman, Michael DiDonato, custom-designs and hand-makes rustic accent pieces for the home, exclusively from locally reclaimed barnwood. The majority of his work is simple and decorative – such as side tables, serving trays and wall-hung letters; but he also builds unique architectural details such as fireplace mantles, shelving, posts and beams.
Originally from New York, Michael (who has a professional background in art and design), settled in Connecticut with his wife, Dawn, and 2 small children. They both fell in love with the small-town rural charm of Wilton, and its abundance of New England style barns and as they renovated an old fixer-upper together, they were compelled to recycle building materials and incorporate small rustic accents into the design, giving their home some much needed character. So, he began scouring local saw mills, old barns, working farms, horse stables and even some nearby beaches to find authentically weathered pieces of wood to reuse. And out of that experience, a passion and an idea for a business was born.
Michael sees that reclaimed wood is in demand right now. People want to incorporate rustic farm house elements into their homes tastefully. And he believes that the soft, warm, weathered character of old wood makes a house feel cozy and inviting – and can compliment any taste or style. Old wood has a story and a soul, Michael says.
Not everyone has the space or a need for posts, beams or mantle-pieces though, so Michael mainly focuses his business on smaller items that are made to order. Custom-designed letter wall art is an extremely popular item at Nod Hill Barnwood. Michael’s love and knowledge of typography is the perfect application of his barnwood finds. This 20” tall letter A was made from old farm fencing.
